dear jason,

a solicitor usually specialises and practises in a particular area of law he or she is interested in or familiar with. since i joined the current law firm in June 2004, I've been specialising in corporate and commercial laws. and in may 2005 i was requested to handle all files relating to intellectual property law while there has been no workload reduction on corporate and commercial files at all. though i'm more intrerested in intellectual property, the workload and the pressure from work i've been subject to is beyond belief. on 28 may 2006, that is, the coming sunday, i'll attend a 3-hour meeting in beijing with the board of directors of a PRC company whose shares are listed on the Growth Enterprise Market of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited. i'm really worried about the meeting and you know why? cos i'll need to talk to the directors about issues that i know little about - somebody filed a winding-up petition against the company and I gotta talk about the court procedures and the options the company can choose. and i'll have to answer the questions raised by the directors during the meeting.

does the aforesaid sound ridiculous to you? a solicitor who specialises in corporate, commercial and intellectual property laws is asked to attend a q&a with the entire board of directors of a Hong Kong-listed company about winding-up procedures in Hong Kong. this is absurd. you'd think even more so if i tell you more about my work particularly in the past few months. i've been under paid for sure. what more is that as of today, i've yet to receive the bonus that my boss promised to distribute in march this year. my resignation letter is ready and to be issued at any time if i dun receive the bonus on 1 june. it's time to end the pain and move on.
