dear jason,

everlasting regret is the new hong kong/china co-production directed by stanley kwan. premiered in venice film festival in september 2005, the film stars one of the hottest hong kong female singers, sammi cheng as qiyao, the lead character of which the film follows from the 40's to the 80's. the film is beautifully shot and filled with exquisitely dressed period settings and costumery but it suffers the same problem with stanley kwan's previous films which is, the film covers the period of over four decades and it involves so many plot twists and characters that just flitter in and out. the audience can hardly keep track of qiyao's life and easily lose interest in the film as a result. at the time when the press announced that sammi cheng is one of the probable winners of best actress in venice film festival, I was really excited about her performance in the film wondering if she could deliver a breakthrough performance of her career. she didn't win at last.

sammi cheng is the star in everlasting regret. she appears in almost every scene of the film. she is luminous on screen. she laughs, she cries, she even bangs her head against a wall. No doubt she has tried her best. but she is empty and robotic in her emotions as reflected in her eyes even when tears are pouring out. however, i do respect her perserverance in finishing this film. i'm sure that we wouldn't see sammi cheung in another film esp. period drama in which the lead actress is required to show such true and deep emotions in the near future.
