dear jason,

we have our own idols when we are young. we scream, we cry, we are desperate to get a glimpse of 'him' or 'her'. but when we grow older, our idols wil be gradually replaced by some so-called 'heroes' whom we truly admire or respect not merely for their good looks but talents or other qualities. our heroes can be a 20-year-old or a 80-year-old man, or can even be a dead man. some of my 'heroes' include jean sibelius, atom egoyan and robert del naja of massive attack.

atom egoyan has made a total of 9 feature films so far and i watched my 6th egoyan's films yesterday - speaking parts (1989). i've been a staunch fan of egoyan since i watched the sweet hereafter for which he got double nominations (best director & best originals screenwriter) in oscar 1997. i dun wanna tell you how much i love the sweet hereafter here as it'd take hours to tell you so and i remember i've mentoned that long time ago.

btw, speaking parts talks about how technology like video conferencing back in late 1980s (today's internet culture) makes real communication between people more and more difficult. ironically, this new form of connection between people such as internet means to bring us together, but instead it is driving people away from real and personal communication into abstract and artificial modes. in the final scene of the film, the two main characters of the film who have not been in mutual contact come together and it seems to be saying that the walls of communication and emotional barriers are being broken down. i totally agree that any new form of communication technology like internet is actually driving us away from each other and making real communication difficult. for people like you and me in the 21st century, we're getting used to communicate with each other via icq or email, which are time- and cost-saving. however, dun you feel that an invisible communication barrier is actually built between ourselves? how many people would use their real names in meeting new people on the internet? an ex-colleague of my father who was over 50 once told me that she met a lot of young new friends on the internet. but i was really shocked when i checked out the details of her icq account - she claimed herself to be 24! i'm not saying that there's anything wrong cheating your age on the internet. btw, who cares? however, the point is, there's no trust between people in the cyberworld and there will never be. so i think the only way for people to connect with each other is to touch, to feel and to talk. another recommendation is to go watching richard curtis's love actually which is filled with a sense of warmth and charm that made it easily enjoyable. just go and watch it with your family or someone you love. do trust me....

jason
