dear jason,

it has been more than two months since i last wrote to you. time passes in an instant. it seems just like yesterday that people were celebrating the new year 2004 and then the year of monkey two weeks afterwards, and now it is towards the end of the second month of 2004.

the academy of motion pictures arts and sciences is moving the oscar ceremony from the end of march (the oscar was always a march event in previous years) to 29th february this year. i was pretty surprised that seabiscuit was nominated for seven awards including best picture as i do not think it deserves any of them at all. among the five best picture nominees, i have watched four of them and i am going to watch the last one, i.e. cold mountain tomorrow with sinead, rachel and kingman. i would definitely wish babe to join us as well and actually i have sent my invitation not long ago but so far i have not received a reply yet. i will talk more about this movie next week.

i am sure that most of you should have heard of a film, lost in translation which is now showing in hong kong. this film is directed by sofia coppola, the daughter of the infamous director, francis ford coppola who directed classics like the godfather trilogy and apocalypse now. lost in translation is the second feature film directed by ms. coppola and the film is tremendously successful and has garnered over 100 awards in major film festivals worldwide. i actually enjoyed her debut feature film, the virgin suicides very much. i even bought and read the novel which the film is adapted from. i also collected some of the films' postcards which i always do for films i am really crazy about. the virgin suicides and lost in translation carry very similar style of film-making. both films are slow-paced, dreamy and have superb soundtracks. lost in translation focuses on the disorientation of foreigners in tokyo and the development of a relationship, which is, in my view, an truly unique one between two americans who are both, for their respective reasons, "lost" in tokyo, japan. the relationship between the two protagonists are unique because i have never seen such a vague and.... ummm i am not sure which subjective can best describe their relationship but the point is that they are not lovers however, they are more than friends at the same time and fate brings them together only because they are two lonely souls spending a week's time in tokyo where they cannot find anything to relate to. i cannot say that the film is a masterpiece but somehow, something (i do not really know what it is) in the film lingers and it grows on me. and if you happen to have travelled to some foreign places alone and found yourself terribly lonely like i did in amsterdam last year, you would definitely love this film more.

well, may be it's time for me to go to bed. i am actually waiting for someone's call but it seems that i should stop now.

jason
