FOREWORD

The main purpose for the Hong Kong Examination Authority to include individual research project as one of the five testing areas of the A-Level Biology Teacher Assessment Scheme(TAS) is to assess the affective characteristics of a student, and on the other hand, provide a great opportunity for the students to look deeply into their favourite parts of biology and seek the required information all by themselves. I choose this topic mainly in accordance with the above two testing purposes.

In April, at the time when I was told that every A-Level Biology student had to design an individual research project, I had undoubtedly chosen The Eye and Eye Diseases as my project topic in my mind. Why is that, you may wonder? As a matter of fact, I was diagnosed to have a serious kind of eye disease on both of my eyes last year. Then I undergone an advanced and complicated surgery and I am now still under the period of convalescence. This unexpected disease not only brought great suffering to me but the poor optical condition also affected my preparation for the Hong Kong Certificate Examination and therefore the result was unsatisfactory. For I once had eye problem, I decided to find out what my eye disease really was and what were the possible treatments for it. And thus I determined to investigate deeply into this area and of course other things about our "window to the soul" as well.
